Tony Blair and chauvinism?

Today British Prime Minister announced to his supports in Sedgefield that he will officially resign on 27th June 2007.

Many things can be said about his time in office: a time when the membership of his own party plummeted.

However, a passage from his speech left me aghast:

"The British are special - the world knows it, in our innermost thoughts we know it. This is the greatest nation on earth."

It is a long time since I have seen such chauvinism. Blair repeatedly castigates the Scottish National Party, which is scrupulous in its references to the other countries of the British Isles and elsewhere in the world; then in his resignation speech he uses language which is politically incorrect in extremis.

It is said that he pondered long and hard concerning the content of this speech. If this is so, his true feelings have been revealed, and they are ugly.
