What did they want the IRA to say?

The IRA has declared that they no longer intend to achieve the unification of Ireland by violent means.

This statement has been warmly welcomed by London and Dublin.

However, Ulster Unionists have expressed no satisfaction; and the followers of Ian Paisley are not dancing in the streets.

Would they really have preferred the IRA declaring that the they would continue to use violence to achieve their ends?

Policemen in plain clothes

How can you tell that a man in plain clothes with a gun is a London policeman and not a terrorist?

I cannot answer this question. Can the police?

Blair's policy and the London attacks

Tony Blair has indicated that there is no connection between his military and political support for George W. Bush and the bombings in London.

If he really believes that one must doubt not only his judgement, but also his sanity.

We shall take action

According to the Scottish Police, they will take robust action against those who use violence at Gleneagles.

Does that mean that they will take robust action against the world leaders who are participating the G8 Summit within the luxury hotel?

I am somewhat sceptical!

Where were the Africans?

I must confess a measure of skepticism concerning the Live8 Concerts in various parts of the world: well at least in London.

The message was minimal; and there is evidence that many attended because the concert was free and not because of Making Poverty History. (What a marvelous slogan!)

I was also concerned because Bob Geldorf did not invite a single performer from the Third World to participate. This would not have given me much concern if the spectators were paying £50.00 for a ticket: and that money were going towards development projects.

The monoculture of the event clearly showed the unthinking cultural imperialism which dominates the Western world. I am thinking primarily of British/American culture.

Traditional cultures are being exterminated; it was ironical that an event which was meant to focuss attention on the Third World unthinkingly reinforced globalization in the negative sense of the word!
