Road to Dundee

It is a strange fact that Dundee is hugely undervalued architecturally in spite of the fact that it possesses almost 1000 listed buildings. It has a medieval core, 2 cathedrals, a marvelous position upon the Firth of Tay. Moreover, it has an exciting townscape because of its hilly position.

I visited it recently and was astonished. This is not the place to preach, but the city is undergoing an renaissance, which will include the dock area. There is also the possibility that the disastrous planning decision which placed an inner bypass between the city and the sea will at least be ameliorated. Restoration work is continuing, and landscaping and civic art are of high quality. A recent building of world-class is the Maggie's Centre by Frank Gehry.

Cast aside your prejudices, and pay a visit to Scotland Fourth City!
